This publication is a collection of stories on the impact of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria from different individuals and organizations in 11 countries on the African continent.
For seven years the Global Fund has tirelessly been involved in prevention and treatment efforts to eradicate these three pandemics.

These stories come from a variety of sources: people living with HIV/AIDS, those receiving mosquito nets, government agencies strengthening national health systems and organizations involved in the fight in their communities. All their recognizable efforts echo the importance of the financial assistance received by the Global Fund.

Friends Africa extends immense gratitude to all who contributed by submitting stories for this edition of “What the Global Fund Means to Africans”

Bienvenue sur le blog des Amis du Fonds mondial Afrique ! Ceci est le premier de nos articles.

Nous commençons avec une invitation à tous les Africains pour nous raconter la manière dont le Fonds mondial a changé des vies et des communautés dans votre pays. En 2007, nous avons publié en anglais « What the Global Fund Means to Africans™» (Que signifie le Fonds mondial pour les Africains) pour montrer l'impact du Fonds mondial et rencontrer les gens dont la vie a été changée. Nous préparons une deuxième édition qui sera publiée en 2009 et nous aimerions recevoir vos histoires !

Keeping in line with our vision to see an African continent free of AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis, Friends Africa is in the process of compiling two publications focused on "What the Global Fund Means to Africans" and "Innovative Practices in Africa on AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis". These reports will further highlight the relevance and importance of such a financing mechanism as the Global Fund, but also advocate for continued resources to support the fight against the three pandemics.

"What the Global Fund Means to Africans" looks at how the Global Fund has impacted lives and communities in Africa; submissions are accepted from all over Africa from persons and / or organizations that are willing to share their personal experiences about the impact of the Global Fund. The "Innovative Practices" report is a documentation of innovative practices used by NGOs, governments, and the private sector in the fight against AIDS, TB, and malaria. We aim at identifying people/institutions in any of these three sectors who are trying and succeeding at new and innovative strategies in implementing AIDS, TB and Malaria projects/interventions in Africa. These projects do not have to be linked to the Global Fund.

The Global Fund now a fully Autonomous International Financial Institution
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) was established in 2002, and is a unique global public/private partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected societies dedicated to attracting and disbursing resources to prevent and treat AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis. At its inception, the Global Fund entered into an Administrative Services Agreement with World Health Organization; in December 2008, this partnership agreement was terminated.

While the Global Fund's mission, vision and status as an International institution remains the same; their new status allows them to supervise their own administrative services such as human resources, finance, administration, procurement and IT services. In addition, this change will allow the Global Fund more flexibility within the organization with regards to financing and organizational structure.

Friends Africa Highlights 2008
In 2008, Friends Africa was involved in several efforts to bring our vision to fruition. Friends Africa activities span over a wide variety of efforts geared towards eradicating AIDS, TB and Malaria, some of such activities include conferences, fundraising, advocacy, documentation, capacity building and etc. Out of our outstanding engagements in 2008, a few have been highlighted to give a preview of what is to come in a bigger and better 2009.

ETHIOPIA: Turning the Tide Against Malaria within the Global Fund Publication.
In recognition of World Malaria Day in April 2008, Friends Africa launched a publication on the work of the Global Fund in Ethiopia. In addition to the celebration of the World Malaria Day, the publication serves as a highlight on the use of the resources provided by the Global fund to fight Malaria, a proof that the resources are being used effectively to eradicate Malaria, hence achieving the Millennium Development Goals and reducing death. This year a Web campaign is in the works for World TB Day (March 2009) and a possible publication for World Malaria and World AIDS Days. 2009 Capacity Building Seminar…
With a goal of building fundraising, networking and implementation capabilities of grassroots organizations, in 2008 Friends Africa organized a Grassroots NGO Capacity Building seminar in conjunction with AFRICASO. The event was held in Accra, Ghana in September 2008 and 60 African Grassroots organizations from 26 African countries participated.
The 2009 seminar is currently in the works; it is scheduled for the third quarter of 2009. This event will feature African Grassroots NGO receiving adequate knowledge to be more effective in the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria in their communities.
